You’re Never Too Old to Start a Business

If you think you’re too old and set in your ways to change, I urge you to think again.

Consider the story of the Waodani, a violent and isolated tribe from the Amazon basin of Ecuador. Their way of life was to kill each other or be killed and they were on the verge of extinction in the mid 1950s.

They were contacted by five North American missionary families. All five of the men were murdered. Soon after, the wife of one of the men and the sister of another went to live with the Waodani. Later, the son of one of the slain men moved his family from Florida to live with the same Waodani family that had killed his father.

Within two years after family members of the men who were killed by the Waodani moved in with the tribe, the tribe’s homicide rate dropped by over 90 percent. That’s some pretty spectacular change!

Their story is told in Beyond the Gates of Splendor, winner of the 2002 Crystal Heart Award from the Heartland Film Festival. It’s absolutely the most powerful film I have ever seen. I was stunned by the events I saw documented on the screen and when I walked out of the theater I knew that it was very unlikely that I’d ever again use the excuse “I’m too set in my ways to change.”

So if you’re thinking about starting your own business, I say go for it, whether you’re 6 or 106 or anywhere in between. Get the DVD and watch for yourself.

Let me know your thoughts on the film and how I can help you with your business startup.
