In an earlier post, I said you need to think carefully about what kind of business to start. I strongly suggest that you begin your entrepreneurial endeavors with a home-based, low-operating-cost enterprise. I encourage you to test out your business idea before investing a lot of hours and dollars in it, even if that means beginning on a part-time basis.
One of the most frustrating situations for many business startups is finding out that nobody really wants their fantastic new-fangled product or service. Big successes often come not from creating new and better products, but by delivering desired products (and services) in new and better ways.
If you’re struggling to come up with ideas, check out this recent list of 998 business ideas that was developed by nine students in Seth Godin’s alternative MBA program.
Just to give you a taste of what they came up with, here are a few of my favorites:
Prepackaged school supplies based on the list from school districts
Internet & webcam set up service for seniors to communicate with grandkids
Webcam security set up to watch kids, dogs, older parents
Closet organization for adult men – Garanimalize their clothing for them after the fact
Senior friend – hire people to come by to spend 30 minutes just hanging with your older relative who lives away from you
Yoga services/teachers for corporations during lunchtime
A newsletter for people laid off of their jobs
