But it&#8217;s pretty expensive stuff.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a cost-conscious soloprenuer, you&#8217;ll be happy to know that there&#8217;s a great (and free) alternative to buying those products.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\">Open Office <\/a>offers a suite of six programs that will allow you to perform most of the usual applications needed in a small business.  These include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">Writer (to create text documents)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">Calc (to create spreadsheets) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">Base (complete data base management system)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">Draw (a full-featured graphics program)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">Impress (to create presentations) and <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">Math (to create equations and formulas)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re familiar with the way that the popular office suites work (and even if you&#8217;re not), you can probably be up and running quickly with Open Office.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\nIf you have questions, they have an extensive <a href=\"http:\/\/support.openoffice.org\/\">support site<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">There&#8217;s also a collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/plan-b-for-openoffice.org\/index\">awesome video-based documentation<\/a> that actually <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>shows you<\/strong><strong style=\"font-weight: 400\"> what to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Open Office gives you the capability to open files created by Microsoft programs and save your files in<br \/>\nformats that can be opened by them.  What this means is that, for example, you can open a Word document or Excel spreadsheet that someone sends you without having to have the Microsoft software on your computer.<\/p>\n<p>And you&#8217;ll be able to save your documents and spreadsheets in a way that your clients, colleagues, and virtual assistant who don&#8217;t have Open Office can still read them.<\/p>\n<p>Go try it.
